Scientists plan their own March on Washington to protest Trump’s policies.

The emerging plans for The March for Science is creating a buzz. The Facebook page has over 220,000 members.  The website has a section for volunteering for a possible march, or marches, in Minnesota. Also, see “I’m going to #sciencemarch in Washington. Here’s why,” posted on Statnews.com on 1-30-17, and, also from Statnew.com, “Scientists plan their own march on Washington,” posted 1-25-17. And, “Scientists Want to March on Washington, Too,” posted by The Science of Us blog on 1-25-17.

(updated 1-31-17) The New York Times published an article on 1-31-17 by a climate psychologist who advocates against participating in the march.  In “A Scientists’ March on Washington is a Bad Idea” the author, Robert S. Young, advocates that this march will inevitably be compared to the “overtly political” Women’s March on Washington.  He predicts that the march will only “turn scientists into another group caught up in the culture wars, and will only further drive the wedge between scientists and a certain segment of the American electorate.”  Rather than marching, he recommends that scientist reach out to their communities and try to connect with people and groups who have never met a scientist and don’t really know much about science.
