Mental Health Professionals react to the Presidential Candidates

The APAPA pollA (psychiatry) posted “Secret Poll: Your Preference for Our Next President?” online, with partial results of the poll provided.  3116 people responded to the poll, mostly psychiatrists but also some psychologists (11%), SWs and RNs (total of 22%).  So, it is a pretty diverse poll with a significant number of responses.

Also, the Scramento Bee published “One expert’s opinion: Trump does not have a personality disorder, but….” On 8-25-16.

The article is a commentary by forensic psychologist Paul G. Mattiuzzi, Ph.D. Dr. Mattiuzzi states, “I can state confidently that Donald Trump does not have narcissistic personality disorder…” And, “To start with, a diagnostic label cannot be assigned to an individual without their consent or without legal authorization. No law requires politicians to submit to psychological fitness examinations.”  He does, however, go on note that the diagnosis of a personality disorder requires that the “patient” have “clinically significant distress or actual adaptive impairment,” and Trump has displayed neither – in particular, rather than feeling hampered by his “magnified ego,” he has “validated it and reveled in it.”  (Others may argue that Trump’s recent behaviors indicate some functioning impairments.)  Dr. Mattiuzi does go on, however, to assert that the best way to understand Trump psychologically is to compare his behavioral patterns, which are well documented, to typical patterns of personality dynamics, and finds that Trump is a psychopath. He provides several examples of how Trump’s behavior fits the criteria established by J. Reid Meloy, Ph.D., in his “seminal text,” “The Psychopathic Mind.”
