Mental Health Practice Resources: Tips for Reducing “Ghosting” in Therapy

The National Psychologist published “’Ghosting’ May Create Ethics Issue” in the November, 2015, issue.  The article discussed the popular concept of “ghosting”, when someone stops rejects a partner by suddenly refusing to respond to messages, and the challenge of responding to patients/clients who suddenly stop coming to appointments and who do not respond to messages.  The article includes some pragmatic recommendations for how to manage this problem, including the recommendation that therapists include a “termination agreement” section of the initial therapy contract.  The article provides a helpful example and discusses the benefits of informing new patients/clients of the importance of having the end of therapy be collaborative.
