Interesting – but controversial- article about possible conection between legalized pot and reduced obesity

Postings from mhconcierge.com and mnmhprof.com generally do not endorse, and are intended to inform.  The following message is intended to inform interested mental and chemical health professionals about an interesting article in the Washington Post. “Want to reduce obesity?  Legalize medical marijuana, researchers say,” was published on 12-7-15 , and describes some interesting, but – obviously- controversial research that  found some reduction in obesity when studying population health in states that have legalized pot.

One possible theory to explain this finding is that having access to medical marijuana provides better symptom management for patients with chronic pain that limits their activity levels.  Of course, other researchers have hypothesized the opposite- that legalizing pot will lead to an increase in sedentary lifestyles in the population, and also an increase in weight due to the “munchies.”

As they often say in science- “more research is needed.”
