Insomnia update: tart cherry juice found to have remarkable benefit (but from small study)

Following up on last week’s posting about a sleep scientist’s advice opposing use of sleep medications, and advocating for naturalistic and psychological, here is another interesting article about research that finds that tart cherry do’s significantly increased sleep time for insomniacs. The ScienceBlog.com published “Montmorency Tart Cherry Juice Increased Sleep Time in Insomniacs” on 10-28-17.  The results were significant and found that the subjects who received the tart cherry juice treatment rated their sleep is significantly better, and were found to have actually slept on the average 84 more minutes than the control group.

This study used a randomized, double-blind, placebo-can trolled clinical trials, but for only eight subjects. The study administered it twice a day, 8 ounces per dose, morning and evening, with even goes coming about 1 to 2 hours before bedtime.  The author notes that the technology used to measure sleep was more accurate than is generally used for similar studies. The article includes some theorizing about the components of the Jews that may contribute the sleep benefits, which may be considerable for a typical insomniac.

MHConcierge’s take: too bad the study involved only eight subjects, but the results are intriguing, and it is certainly “doable” to try drinking the tart cherry juice, which is readily available and easily “dosed.”
